Pride & Planning:
Honor Your Life, Protect Your Legacy
Are your affairs in order? Most of us put off creating a will and related documents because we think it will take too much time, cost too much, or that only the wealthy need wills. But everyone—young or older—needs a will, and everyone deserves to have their wishes about medical care respected.
It also doesn’t have to be complicated or expensive. That's why ALRP, Bay Area Lawyers for Individual Freedom (BALIF), Horizons Foundation, and Openhouse are teaming up to provide FREE legal assistance to help you plan your legacy!
How it works:
-
- Register and attend a webinar. We’ll share information about questions to consider and information to collect so that you’re ready to complete your legacy planning documents.
-
- Submit a brief intake form. After the webinar, ALRP will send you a link to complete an intake form. ALRP’s client services staff will review your information and make sure everything’s ready to go before you meet with a lawyer.
-
- Attend our workshop on September 27. Join us at Openhouse on Saturday, September 27, to meet 1:1 with a lawyer and have your documents finalized.
At this time, all scheduled webinars have passed. If you are still interested in our services, please reach out to Emily Heinzen, Supervising Staff Attorney, at (415) 701-1200 ext. 323 or emilyh@alrp.org, and we will keep you informed of future events.
What can we help with?
You’ll be able to leave our workshop with the following documents in hand:
Will: A will is a legal document that determines what happens to your property after your death. A will may also function to name a guardian for a minor child or name an executor to handle your affairs.
Power of Attorney: A Power of Attorney is a legal document that gives a designated person the power to act for you regarding financial or healthcare matters.
Advance Health Care Directive: An Advance Health Care Directive is a way to ensure that your wishes regarding your health care are carried out if you should become unable to speak for yourself.
FAQ:
Why draft legacy documents?
Everyone deserves to have a say in their treatment and legacy. No matter your financial situation, having a will, power of attorney, and advance healthcare directive in place is an important way to make your wishes known, avoid stress and conflict down the road, and leave a legacy on your own terms.
While most people acknowledge the importance of having a will, fewer than one in three actually have one in place. August is National Make A Will month, which means it’s a great time to finally take care of getting this done.
Who’s eligible?
Anyone is welcome to participate.
When you submit your intake questionnaire, we will review your responses to make sure we’ll be able to complete your documents at the workshop on September 27. Individuals with more complex estate planning needs may be referred to work 1:1 with an attorney outside of the workshop.
Are there any fees for this workshop?
Nope! The webinar and workshop are completely free for all participants, and you will leave with your finalized legacy documents in hand. Everyone deserves to have their end of life wishes known and respected.
