Welcoming Two New Board Members
January 21, 2026
We are excited to announce that Joshua Anderson and Tim Sweeney will be joining our Board of Directors in 2026. We are grateful for the leadership and knowledge they bring and look forward to working together in the year ahead!

Joshua Anderson is a Partner of Business Litigation at Cooley LLP. Previously, he worked for nearly 6 years at Willkie Farr & Gallagher, two years at Reed Smith, and served as a Law Clerk for the US District Court for the Western District of Texas. Originally from Texas, Joshua has made California his home since graduating from Berkeley Law in 2016 and remains committed to his community through participation in local legal organizations and pro bono work.
Joshua became familiar with the work of ALRP through his participation in Bay Area Lawyers for Individual Freedom (BALIF), the Bay Area’s LGBTQI bar association. He has experience working with those living with HIV/AIDS as a volunteer at Resource Center Dallas, an HIV/AIDS resource center.
While at Berkeley Law, Joshua was on the California Law Review, the Berkeley Journal of Gender, Law & Justice, the Berkeley Journal of International Law, the Health Law Initiative, the Queer Caucus, and First Generation Professionals. He received his Bachelor of Music from Florida State University.

For more than four decades, Tim Sweeney has worked to advance equality for all people regardless of sexual orientation or gender expression. His first political organizing experience was in California in 1978, working alongside Harvey Milk and community allies from a variety of backgrounds to defeat Prop 6, a ballot measure that would have banned gay people from teaching in public schools.
Tim has brought deep leadership and advocacy experience to LGBTQ organizations nationwide. His roles have included Executive Director of Lambda Legal (1981–1986); Deputy Director and later Executive Director of Gay Men’s Health Crisis (1986–1993); and Deputy Executive Director of the Empire State Pride Agenda (1994–2000). Tim has also held senior leadership roles in philanthropy, serving as Program Director at the Evelyn & Walter Haas, Jr. Fund (2000–2007), where he helped build national efforts in support of marriage equality, and later as President and CEO of the Gill Foundation (2007-2013), organizing funder collaboratives and strategic partnerships to help win marriage equality and ensure the right of LGBTQ people to serve openly in the military.
Tim is serving or has served on the boards of many organizations, including the Movement Action Fund and Community Change Initiative, Open House, Movement Advancement Project, Third Way, AIDS Action Council, and Funders Concerned About LGBT Issues.
