Turning a Housing Nightmare into a Fresh Start
November 22, 2024
“Henry’s” living situation had been a true nightmare. His apartment regularly flooded with sewage-like material from a burst pipe, and mice had infested the property. The only response from Henry’s property management company was to move him to another unacceptable unit within the building without a promise of fixing his place. These issues not only impacted Henry’s mental health, but also his physical health.
ALRP Attorney Stephen Spano worked closely with Henry’s social worker to address this urgent situation. Although Henry had been awarded a Housing Choice Voucher – a housing subsidy that he could use to pay for rent anywhere in the city – he was having trouble redeeming it within the required 90 days. Earlier in the year, Henry had found a new housing opportunity, but it unfortunately fell through, and the voucher subsequently expired. Both Henry and his social worker, frustrated with the various bureaucratic hurdles, were at a loss on how to move forward.
Stephen used his persuasive and fierce advocacy skills with our local government to give Henry more time to redeem his voucher. He also connected Henry to resources that helped him find a new unit and then expedited the required inspection process. As a result, Henry signed a new lease just a couple of weeks ago and is now settled in his new home, able to use his voucher as needed.
