Kay’s troubles began in 2023, when she found that her housing subsidy hadn’t transferred properly to her new apartment. For over a year, she tried to work with her landlord to resolve the issue, but they were unresponsive. Eventually, since the landlord wasn’t accepting payment, she lost her subsidy.

When Kay came to ALRP in September 2024, her landlord was trying to evict her for nonpayment. By this time, her balance was over $40,000, and she no longer had the subsidy that would have covered it—a situation of the landlord’s making, not hers! For her part, Kay no longer wanted to deal with someone who’d been trying to force her out since day one. So ALRP’s client services team got to work.

Our Senior Supervising Attorney, Allison Pruitt, represented Kay in her eviction case and won a deal through which the landlord would waive the full amount of back rent if Kay moved out. Meanwhile, Staff Attorney Stephen Spano and Social Worker Nancy Martin supported Kay as she found new housing: Stephen worked with the client’s subsidy provider to reinstate her subsidy, and Nancy helped secure funds for her security deposit through the San Francisco Emergency Rental Assistance Program.

Now, thanks to the collaboration of these dedicated advocates at ALRP, and our government and nonprofit partners, Kay can live free from the threat of eviction for the first time in over a year. Teamwork makes the dream work!
