Supporting Gabrielle in Affirming Her Identity

Gabrielle* reached out to ALRP for help updating her gender on her birth certificate. She was anxious about navigating this complex process and unsure of where to begin. Due to a traumatic brain injury, Gabrielle was also having trouble reading and obtaining information online.

Summer Law Clerk Ryan Lee, supported by Supervising Staff Attorney Stephen Spano, helped Gabrielle with the various steps required to move forward. They supported her through updating her government-issued identification with the DMV and with completing the necessary paperwork to petition the State of California to recognize her updated gender. After anxiously waiting for many months, Gabrielle received the court order and, with ALRP’s help, was finally able to request a new birth certificate.

After several more months, Gabrielle finally received her birth certificate reflecting her true gender. She was thrilled and relieved, sharing with us: “It already has changed my life and I’m sure it will continue to in the future.”
