“David’s” fight to remain in his home began in June 2023, when his landlord first sought to evict him. With the help of Senior Housing Attorney Kai Shintani, David reached a settlement that allowed him to remain housed—so long as he paid rent on time and worked toward repaying past rent.

When David’s father became gravely ill, he had to leave town to take care of him. During that time, his landlord turned off the online payment portal that David relied on, making it nearly impossible for David to pay rent while he was out of town tending to his dying father. David’s ability to pay was further complicated by his mental health, which was severely impacted by his father’s death. Instead of working with him, the landlord used this as an excuse to renew her eviction efforts, claiming David had violated their agreement.

Kai immediately stepped in. She successfully stopped the eviction proceedings by showing that David would soon have the money demanded by the landlord. Despite this, the landlord later claimed that David was not paying rent. Kai again stepped in. She showed that David had been making payments, but the landlord just refused to accept those payments—presenting evidence that the landlord had sent David two letters returning his rent payments. She also showed that the amounts that the landlord claimed David owed were incorrect.

As a result, the landlord agreed to drop her eviction case. Now, David remains in his home, free to focus on his well-being—without the fear of losing his housing.
