Leila’s Fight for Housing Stability
August 8, 2025
When “Leila,” a trans woman of color living with HIV, was referred to ALRP by the Eviction Defense Collaborative, she was on the verge of losing her home.
After seven years working steadily as a front desk clerk, Leila fell behind on rent. The debt quickly grew, and she was served with an eviction notice.
Senior Supervising Attorney Allison Pruitt stepped in to take on Leila’s case. Allison quickly negotiated with the landlord to reduce the rental debt by $3,000 and then helped complete Leila’s application for emergency rental assistance to cover the balance. The application was approved!

Thanks to Allison’s swift advocacy and support, Leila avoided having to go to court, she kept her job, and she was able to stay in her apartment. With her outstanding balance fully covered and no repayment required, Leila can now focus on maintaining her health.
