Several months ago, we started planning a “will-a-thon” to help members of our community complete their wills and other important legacy documents at no cost to them. One of the reasons was the fact that over half of people over 50 do not have a will. We thought it would be a great success if we were able to help 40 people.

On Saturday, a team of 29 volunteer attorneys and notaries worked alongside ALRP and Openhouse staff to help 80 individuals secure a finalized will, power of attorney, and advanced healthcare directive!

Nearly three-quarters of the people who attended the workshop were seniors, 92% were LGBTQ+ (including 25% who were trans or nonbinary), and 29% were living with HIV.

When ALRP was founded in 1983, we were a team of volunteer attorneys drafting emergency wills for community members dying too soon of AIDS. Four decades later, we still believe that everyone deserves to have a say in their legacy and health care at the end of their lives.

We are so grateful for our ability to continue this work, and for all the volunteers who stepped forward to make Saturday’s Legacy Planning workshop such a resounding success!

Thank you to our volunteers!
