Initially, the court ruled against Jacob, but his landlord failed to complete the required paperwork for the case to move forward, and it was held at a standstill, leaving Jacob in limbo.
- [Advocating for Cece: When Common Sense is Not Enough](https://www.alrp.org/news/advocating-for-cece-when-common-sense-is-not-enough/) - “Cece” was at a loss for how to move forward. The Social Security Administration refused to pay her benefits, claiming that she was incarcerated. This was simply not true. Not only had Cece provided a letter from the San Francisco Sheriff confirming that she was not incarcerated, she had also visited the Social Security office in person at least three times.

Unfortunately and cruelly, our clients often face an uphill battle getting landlords to agree to make this “minor” improvement. That’s where ALRP steps in.

On top of the stress of managing his HIV status and the harassment, narcos had targeted his family and kidnapped his sister-in-law for ransom. Gabriel was unable to leave his house fearing further violence and extortion.

As a result, Rose’s landlord served her with an eviction notice, alleging that she had violated her lease agreement by accumulating too many belongings in her apartment.

Shortly after moving into their new home, however, they faced cruel challenges.

My client was dropped by his insurance company after being diagnosed HIV+, Adam said. I was so horrified by it. I became dedicated to making sure this didnt happen to anyone else in the future.

Suddenly she was filing eviction papers and trying to get a restraining order against him. Jins client was woken up at 3 a.m. one night because his landlord was running a paper shredder right outside his front door. When the landlord wasnt running a shredder, she was banging on the stairs or playing the TV or radio upstairs at full blast all night long.

It was devastating news for a self-insured person living with HIV. But it wasn’t the first time Walter had heard this. Since 2000, his insurance company had tried to cancel his policy four times for alleged nonpayment of his premiums. “I was at the end of my meds when I found out."
