Questions related to taxes can be very stressful for clients, and it is incredibly helpful to have an attorney who can provide guidance. Helping a client with a tax-related question is typically a discrete task, rather than one requiring ongoing support. Clients with lower incomes may have questions related to taxes on income and benefits.

This MCLE will help attorneys work with their clients to handle these issues as they prepare their federal and state income tax returns.

Topics covered include:

  • Determining a client’s filing requirement;
  • Calculating taxes (if any) on social security and unemployment benefits;
  • Claiming the earned income tax credit and related credits; and
  • Applying for payment plans or offers-in-compromise.

The State Bar of California has certified ALRP, Provider #2485, to provide MCLE credit for this training.
