In October, ALRP was awarded a $60,000 grant from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) to continue our Fair Housing Outreach and Education Program. Under the terms of the grant, ALRP will provide fair housing presentations to housing providers, service providers and people with disabilities, including people with HIV/AIDS.
ALRP will focus its educational efforts on private owners and tenants of Single Room Occupancy (SRO) hotels, where many low-income people with disabilities, including HIV/AIDS reside. ALRP will coordinate training for owners/operators of SRO housing and a training for the staff of the SRO Collaborative, an effort undertaken by the City and County of San Francisco to preserve, stabilize, and improve SRO housing. ALRP will work with the Collaborative to produce Fair Housing Notices in at least three languages for distribution to SRO hotels.
This is the fifth grant from HUD to ALRP for its fair housing work in six years. HUD provides the funding as part of a national effort to increase access to affordable housing for people with disabilities. Only $800,000 is available throughout the entire country to support programs that specifically address the fair housing rights of people with disabilities.
